I’ve stumbled upon a quest.

A few weeks ago, the flatmate and I (plus my sister and her boyfriend, via WhatsApp) were sitting in front of the tv, watching a music channel.

The programme was “40 Unforgettable 90’s Classics”.

Now, when I do this I tend to play a game “What will be number 1” and to make it more fun, we try to guess the top 3. You see, we lead very exciting lifestyles, and so every now and then we need to bring ourselves back down to earth. Ahem. The top three were:

#3. Backstreet’s Back – Backstreet Boys

#2. Believe – Cher

#1. Relight My Fire – Take That and good ol’ Lulu.

I was not overly impressed. In my guessing I completely forgot about Cher, but I still wouldn’t have put any of those 3 in the top 40 songs of the decade.

Then, I second guessed myself. What would I put in the top 40 songs? My overactive imagination ran wild and decided that unless I listen to every song from the 90’s, I won’t be able to sleep at night. Especially If I wrote a whimsical list down.

Therefore, I have started to listen to albums released in the 90’s, in order of release. Bear in mind I’m entrusting Wikipedia as my data source, and Spotify as my streaming service, so it’s not 100% foolproof.

I’m now two weeks and a bit in (started on 29th March) and so far have listened to 63 albums. 25 albums have been skipped due to non-existence, but have been marked for future listening on whichever service I can track them down on.

I’ve been very happy listening to 1990. So much music that I’ve never heard, and it’s all quite decent.

As I write this, I am listening to Read My Lips – Jimmy Somerville which I’m sure was an 80’s album, but like I said…Wikipedia is my source.

Will I get bored and give up? I really hope not. I’d quite like to actually finish a project I’ve started, and since I tend to spread projects over multiple decades it seems a suitable mission. From the Wiki pages, there is just shy of 5000 albums that were released, and I’m on track to listen to around 1800 per year.

Expect to see a blog post in 2020 with my top 40 Unforgettable 90’s Classics. I promise.
