As I continue on my quest to find the ultimate spice and herb organisation system, I come across other things that are easier to obtain than the aforementioned, and I thought it might be interesting to list some of those ideas here. Interesting for me, less so for you.
Outdoor Kitchen – I’ve started with a BBQ, which is standard practice. And I don’t need a fully-fledged kitchen. I’d be happy with a small food prep area, a sink and a pizza oven. When I eventually renovate downstairs by destroying the garage and “conservatory”, the kitchen will be closer to the garden, so I don’t feel the need for an outdoor fridge, ice machine or anything else the rich and famous deem necessary outdoors. When it comes to my real kitchen, I am not opposed to a ice maker and a wine fridge. They just won’t always been turned on – perhaps hidden in a clever way. We shall see.
Herb wall – I’ve ummed and ahhed over this, and I absolutely will do it. It’s going to be awesome, on the outdoor wall between the “conservatory” and the bathroom. Reasons are that there is less sun on that wall, as I don’t want to cremate my wonderful herbs. The decision yet to be made is how they will be displayed, so expect this project to start in 2030 when I’ve made my mind up.
Vegetables – I’m going to grow veg in raised planters in my garden. To get there, I need to finish clearing the garden, pull up paving slabs, lay new paving slabs, and lay some turf. How much of it I want to do at once depends on one thing alone – budget. Although some of the girls mentioned that their partners would happily come and help so I feel like a BBQ is in order soon.
Speaking of budget – The bathroom. The reason the bathroom is my most hated room is that it is SO difficult to clean properly, with too many nooks and crannies. I want a modern bathroom, not a damp, insect-infested room reminiscent of caravan park shared bathrooms. Given these facts, I will focus on the bathroom in the next stage of my renovations, and I’m currently saving up to do so.
Back to aspirations, I’d also like to rebuild the front garden wall (it’s a sad, broken wall at the moment), and pave over the weed-infested garden. I’ll put a few planters out there with some flowers in to brighten it up, and it should be easy to maintain.
And when I finally do the major renovation, I need a design solution for my rubbish bins. they’re these large wheely bins that are the right size for a family but not necessarily for little ol’ me. They currently live out of sight in the garage, so i’ll need a bin shed on the drive to hide the bloody things/stop them from being blown into the road by the wind. I actually don’t care what they look like, but I do care that people don’t seem to know how to recycle properly, and I want them locked away so the vodka bottles go in the right bin.
So yes, all of those things seem easier and more approachable than finding a solution to spice and herb storage. I think when I have my new kitchen, I’ll need to build in a solution then, rather than try to fit a square peg into a round hole today.
Peace out xoxo
