I was singing along to the song confidently. David Bowie, but I couldn’t quite remember the song title. I should have carried on singing until I got to the chorus of “Life On Mars?” instead of agreeing with my teammates on the wrong answer.

The right answer was on a poster right next to us too.

The confidence of a pub quiz answer is the second most important quality of a quizzer. The first is getting the answer right, and the third is accepting when you are wrong. When I solo quiz, it’s much easier to be confident without democracy.

Autocratic decisions happen on a sliding scale:

1. 100% know that the answer is bees.
2. It’s between bees or wasps.
3. For some weird reason, I think the answer is hornet.
4. No clue. Guessing with butterfly.

In a group setting, you can take all four of those scenarios and then throw in:

1. Well, you really know insects very well, so we’ll go with your answer of wasps.
2. I also know a lot about insects, and I think that the answer is bees.
3. Do you think, or do you know?
4. I don’t know anything about insects, but I’m certain it’s a hornet.
5. Fine. We’ll put wasps.

The answer was bees.

From my perspective (and I may be the only one who thinks this), the final quality of a good quizzer is someone who turns up to have fun, as it is, after all, a social event at the pub, and not the final of University Challenge. Doing it alone may seem like a serious approach, but I find I actually enjoy it more that way.
