My current (almost) obsession is mathematics. I’m almost at the buying books to study stage – I’ve been thinking about it for almost 6 months, on the back burner, waiting for some motivation.
I always enjoyed the subject at school, and I wasn’t terrible at it. I didn’t get the grade I wanted a GSCE to take it as an A-Level as the jump is huge, so I didn’t. I won’t say I regret that decision because I wouldn’t have coped (I hardly coped as it was), but now I have no pressure to do any exams, and I can learn freely, so why not start?
I mentioned buying books because I cannot learn from a screen. For complex learning, I need a physical book. Mainly so I can throw it across the room when I’m frustrated, but also to be able to sell it once I’m done and feel accomplished. My education was mixed media; it started with books only, then a mix of CD-ROMs and books, and eventually, the early days of the internet hit us, and we used it to find GoogleWhacks. Ultimately, I know that I can learn so much for free on the ol’ interwebs, but it doesn’t fully sink in unless I read it in a physical format.
My current frustration is, of course, which book to buy and at what level. Do I want to cover GCSE Maths again to make sure my brain is in good working order, then buy a bridging-the-gap book, so I don’t overwhelm myself before attempting A-Level Maths? I think now I’ve written it out, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.
Well, consider. I haven’t fully committed yet. Not sure why I’m holding back, but I’m almost certain I’ll find that out by the next time I write about it.
5 years later….
Peace out xoxo
